Microsoft Windows for 64-bit Extended Systems

Adding OEM drivers to Windows Setup - Part #5, Compiling a new ISO file:

Create a bootable CD-ROM:
Now that we have our modified Windows installation source it would be nice to be able to burn it back to a bootable CD-ROM. There are many guides on the Internet to do this, my guide is based on Nero 6.3.0.2. If you prefer another Burning package, I suggest you search for a guide, on how to create bootable Windows installation media, for you burning software on www.google.com.
The requirements and a detailed instructions for creating bootable Windows installation media is displayed below.

Requirements:
  • Burning software.
  • Microsoft's CD-ROM boot sector that displays the 'Press any key to boot from CD...'. You can download it here.
  • And of course the modified installation source.
Step-by-step procedure:
  1. Start Nero Burning Rom.
  2. Begin a New Compilation by selecting File --> New... .
  3. Make sure CD is selected om the drop down box. Scroll down and select CD-ROM (Boot).
  4. If the Boot was not selected, select it.
  5. Make sure you extracted the boot.zip to a temporary directory. Also pay special attention to the field Number of loaded sectors:, the value entered here needs to be 4. Make sure you enter the values in the various fields as shown in the picture below.

  6. Now select the ISO tab.
  7. Enter all values as shown in the picture below. As character set, DOS has been selected. Although ISO 9660 should be the value selected here, but that will change any extended characters on the CD-ROM like ~ to _ and thus resulting in the Windows Setup not able to locate the file.

  8. Select the Label tab.
  9. The official CD-ROM label is: AB1SXFRE_EN for unchecked builds (that is without symbol files), but you can place any value here as long as it's compliant wil the ISO 9660 standard.

  10. Now click New.
  11. Browse to the folder where you copied the Windows Installation source to and select the content of that folder. Now drag and drop it from the right pane to the left pane. And you get something as shown in the picture below.

  12. If you own a Realtek 8169/8110 based Network Interface Card or own a K8T Neo-FIS2R do you self a favour and check my Realtek 8169/8110 hack before you compile the ISO or burn the CD-ROM.
  13. If you want to compile the ISO file, make sure you select the Nero Image Recorder under Recorder --> Choose Recorder..., if you want to burn to CD instead, just be sure you didn't select Nero's Image Recorder ;-).
  14. Either 'Burn' the ISO file or burn the CD-ROM.
  15. Done.
